A start in fashion led Kasey Tsang to graphics and branding design and she now has her own design agency with a global clientele.
What’s your story?
I began my design career as a fashion designer but early on the transient nature of Fashion made me want to pivot. I then worked as a fashion graphic and textiles designer for a prominent UK high street brand before eventually transitioning into graphics and branding design.
I worked as an in-house designer for a few years before eventually making the jump and becoming my own boss. I now run a boutique design agency, offering bespoke design services around the globe.
I’m also working on launching the art and licensing side of my business offering a collection of surface design and unique art pieces. Watch this space!
What excites you most about your industry?
I love working with new brands, it’s exhilarating to be able to create something from the ground up and make impactful and lasting designs. Helping a client manifest their passion-project or that business they have been talking about for years is incredibly rewarding.
What is your connection to Asia?
I’m from Hong Kong and I spent most of my life in Asia. Hong Kong is where I met my partner Rob and some incredible friends from all over the world. Hong Kong is a place like no other.
Favourite city in Asia for business and why?
Definitely Hong Kong, for the energy and opportunities in the city which are just incredible. Everyone is always hustling! People either have side hustles or are making the jump to starting their own business. You are never more than 1 or 2 connections away from being introduced to someone who can potentially change your life and business.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.
Who inspires you?
Fellow entrepreneurs and my clients. Their grit, determination and hard work inspires me.
What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?
Dust is important. It feeds the ocean by providing nutrients to microscopic plants which the entire marine food chain depends on. Dust from the Sahara desert also helps the Amazon rainforest, as some of its properties acts as fertiliser.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
I took a 2 week sculpting class last year in Florence and it was an amazing experience. I loved working with the clay and with my hands. It was definitely my eat pray love moment. In another life, maybe I could have been a sculptor.
How do you unwind?
With a glass of wine and a good book or maybe a good Netflix show. I also like to go hiking, as well as hunting for the best coffee shops in town. I’ve also recently re-discovered my love of painting and it’s been a very soothing way to wind down.
Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?
Thailand. There is an island that I love, it’s remote and only reachable by speedboat from Phuket. It’s an inclusive resort but is the perfect place to disconnect and recharge. You wake up to the view of the ocean, do yoga, get a massage, nap to the sound of the cicadas and go to bed happy.
Everyone in business should read this book:
The 4 hour workweek by Tim Ferris and You are a Badass by Jen Sincero. Both great books to reprogram your mindset and help you go for it.
