In a recent LinkedIn post, Matt Gray offers a structured approach for individuals and founders experiencing a lack of progress. Gray, a proponent of actionable strategies, breaks down the process of overcoming inertia into four distinct steps, emphasizing the power of small, consistent actions to build significant momentum.

The Power of Minimum Viable Action

Gray begins by introducing the concept of the “Minimum Viable Action,” a strategy focused on identifying and executing the absolute smallest possible step forward. He stresses that this is not about finding the perfect or largest action, but simply the tiniest step. “When I’m stuck, I find the smallest possible action I can take. Not the perfect action. Not the big action. The tiniest step forward,” Gray writes. This approach counters the common tendency to wait for complete clarity on a path, arguing instead that only the next step is necessary.

“Most people stay stuck because they’re waiting for clarity on the whole path. But you don’t need the whole path. You just need the next step.”

Stacking Actions to Build Momentum

The second phase of Gray’s strategy is the “Momentum Stack.” Here, he advocates for layering small actions on top of each other, where each subsequent action becomes easier due to the energy generated by the previous one. As Gray explains, “Action 1 creates energy. Action 2 builds on that energy. Action 3 multiplies the energy. Action 4 sustains the energy.” This compounding effect, he suggests, is the key to sustained progress.

Eliminating Friction for Velocity

In his third step, “Friction Elimination,” Gray focuses on proactively removing elements that hinder progress. This involves identifying and cutting out sources of slowdown such as unclear goals, energy drains, decision fatigue, and overly complex processes. “Every point of friction you remove doubles your velocity,” Gray asserts, highlighting the significant impact of streamlining workflows and mental overhead.

Leveraging Momentum Multipliers and Anchoring

Gray then introduces “Momentum Multipliers” as an advanced tactic. This involves identifying actions that create compound effects, such as building systems that generate more systems, forging connections that lead to further relationships, or achieving successes that enable greater accomplishments. These leverage points, according to Gray, can turn one good action into numerous opportunities.

“These are the leverage points. One good action creates ten more opportunities.”

The ultimate strategy, “Momentum Anchoring,” involves connecting the momentum built through action to one’s core identity. Gray suggests adopting affirmations like “I am someone who takes action,” “I am someone who follows through,” or “I am someone who builds systems.” By integrating momentum into one’s identity, Gray believes it becomes an unstoppable force.

“Every breakthrough I’ve ever had followed this pattern: Stuck → Small action → Slight progress → Increased confidence → Bigger action → Real progress → Sustained momentum.”

Gray concludes his post by reiterating the core message: find the smallest possible action, take it, and then take the next one. His framework provides a practical roadmap for anyone looking to break through periods of stagnation and build lasting momentum.
