Bradford observes that many executives, despite their strategic brilliance, are applying outdated strategies to their bodies. These strategies, effective in their 20s, often involve cardio and calorie restriction, which she argues are now counterproductive. She points out the disconnect:

“The executives I work with are brilliant at strategy. They understand leverage. They know how to optimise systems. But they’re still treating their bodies like they did in their 20s.”

This approach, Bradford contends, is optimizing the wrong variable. The real challenge isn’t about pushing harder, but about adapting to current biological realities.

Muscle as the Metabolic Engine for Sustainable Performance

Central to Bradford’s argument is the role of muscle. She emphasizes that muscle is far more than an aesthetic concern; it’s a vital metabolic organ that underpins overall health and performance. According to Bradford:

“Because it’s the metabolic organ that supports everything you’re trying to sustain: energy, cognitive performance, hormonal balance, insulin sensitivity, long-term independence.”

She advocates for resistance training and adequate protein intake not as optional additions, but as essential infrastructure investments. These are critical for maintaining full capacity well into later decades, such as 55, 65, and 75. Bradford concludes that sustainable performance in midlife is achieved by engineering for the body’s current biology, rather than clinging to outdated assumptions based on a younger physiology.
