McCauley highlights that Gartner has officially positioned generative AI and Agentic AI within the ‘trough of disillusionment’ on its 2026 Hype Cycle map. While traditionally depicted as a smooth downward curve followed by a steady climb to a ‘plateau of productivity,’ McCauley contends that the AI cycle is set to be far more turbulent.

“The cycle for AI is looking to be much more choppy and arduous, one that befits just how jarringly transformative this moment will be.”

The Hurdles to AI Productivity

According to McCauley, two primary factors will make the exit from this disillusionment phase particularly difficult. The first relates to the underlying infrastructure, specifically enterprise data and legacy systems. She explains that traditional enterprise systems relied on human intervention to bridge gaps and make connections.

Now, as businesses attempt to leverage AI to navigate these same gaps, challenges arise. McCauley points to the broader implications for roles, human purpose, and the future of work. She references Microsoft’s Work Trend Index, which found that a significant portion of individuals feel safer focusing on current tasks rather than redesigning work around AI.

“Microsoft’s Work Trend Index found 45% of people say it feels safer to focus on current goals than to redesign work around AI. That holds us back from tapping into the promise of AI.”

An Accelerated Industrial Revolution?

The combination of these infrastructural and human challenges suggests a departure from the smooth trajectory of past technological adoption. McCauley posits that the shape of the AI adoption curve might resemble a sawtooth pattern or a complex overlap of multiple curves.

Ultimately, McCauley argues that the experience of navigating this AI transition could feel compressed and intense.

“Whatever the shape, I think it’ll feel like the eighty years of the industrial revolution smashed into five or ten. Or perhaps it already does.”

Her analysis underscores the unique and potentially disruptive nature of the current AI wave, contrasting it with the more gradual progression of previous technological advancements.
