In a recent LinkedIn post, Linas Beliūnas discusses a significant, yet potentially underestimated, development from OpenAI: the integration of group chat functionality into its platform. Beliūnas posits that this feature is not merely an addition but a fundamental shift that could reshape the future of financial technology.

The ‘WeChat Moment’ for AI and Finance

Beliūnas frames this development as OpenAI’s “West’s WeChat Moment,” suggesting it unlocks a new distribution layer with profound implications. He highlights the ability for up to 20 people to collaborate with AI assistance, stating:

“Planning, building, debating – all with AI inside the room. A small feature on paper, but a paradigm shift in practice.”

According to Beliūnas, adding social coordination to an AI interface transforms it from a simple chatbot into a powerful platform. He elaborates on OpenAI’s strategic move:

For 18 months, OpenAI has been quietly assembling the components of an Everything App:

  • ↳ Apps SDK → native apps inside ChatGPT
  • ↳ Atlas browser → conversational navigation
  • ↳ Sora → video + creator ecosystem
  • ↳ Stripe integration → agentic commerce rails
  • ↳ Now: group chats → social layer + collaboration

This integrated approach, Beliūnas argues, creates a unified experience with “One interface. One identity. One behavioral loop.” He sees this as the Western world’s answer to WeChat’s expansion, but one built on intelligence rather than just messaging, leveraging ChatGPT’s substantial user base of approximately 800 million weekly users.

Redefining Financial Discovery and Decision-Making

The core of Beliūnas’s analysis focuses on how this new paradigm impacts the financial sector. He contends that AI agents operating within a social, collaborative environment will fundamentally alter how consumers interact with financial products and services.

“When discovery → recommendation → decision → transaction all happen inside ChatGPT… Why would users jump to 12 different fintech apps?” Beliūnas questions, underscoring the potential for disruption.

He further suggests that this shift could render traditional customer acquisition strategies and comparison tools obsolete. In Beliūnas’s view, OpenAI is architecting a future where its conversational interface acts as the primary aggregator, relegating other services to the role of plugins, much like the ecosystems of WeChat, iOS, or Android.

The Re-bundling of Finance

Beliūnas concludes by drawing a parallel between the past decade of finance and the future he foresees. “FinTech spent a decade unbundling finance. OpenAI is about to re-bundle all of it – inside one conversational layer,” he states. This strategic re-bundling, powered by AI and social interaction, represents, in his assessment, the emergence of a new “financial OS” being built in real-time.
