Satya Nadella Details Microsoft’s AI Infrastructure and Agent Platform Growth

In a recent LinkedIn post, Satya Nadella discusses Microsoft’s strategic focus on AI infrastructure and solutions, highlighting the company’s significant progress and future outlook in what he describes as the “agentic computing era.” Nadella framed the company’s recent quarterly earnings call as a moment to underscore their commitment to empowering businesses with AI tools that “eval-max their outcomes.”

AI Business Surges Amidst Platform Shift

Nadella reported substantial growth in Microsoft’s AI business, which he stated has surpassed a $37 billion annual revenue run rate, marking an impressive 123% increase. He emphasized that the technology industry is on the cusp of a “consequential platform shift” moving from user-driven workloads to a hybrid model incorporating agents. This evolution, according to Nadella, is poised to expand the total addressable market (TAM) and fundamentally alter value creation across the global economy.

“We are at the beginning of one of the most consequential platform shifts that will change the entire tech stack as we move from end-user driven workloads to workloads driven by end-users and agents.”

Core Priorities: Infrastructure and Agent Systems

To capitalize on this opportunity, Nadella outlined two primary priorities for Microsoft. The first is the development of a leading AI infrastructure and agent platform. He noted the significant expansion of data center capacity, with an additional gigawatt added this quarter, putting the company on track to double its footprint in two years to meet customer demand.

Regarding the agent application platform, Nadella highlighted the adoption of multi-model offerings. He stated that “10,000 customers have used more than one model on Foundry. 5,000 have used OSS models.” Furthermore, he pointed to the value of Microsoft’s “IQ layers” across M365, Fabric, and Foundry, which provide a crucial context engine for thousands of customers utilizing or developing agents.

High-Value Agentic Systems in Key Domains

The second priority, as detailed by Nadella, involves building high-value agentic systems in critical areas such as productivity, coding, and security. In the realm of knowledge work, Microsoft has seen rapid growth, with over 20 million M365 Copilot seats. Nadella expressed enthusiasm for Copilot’s adoption, noting,

“And so cool to see weekly Copilot engagement on par with Outlook. It’s truly becoming a habit!”

In software development, GitHub Copilot is now utilized by nearly 140,000 organizations, with the GitHub Copilot CLI experiencing rapid, month-over-month usage doubling. Security is another key domain where Nadella reported a “2X increase in Security Copilot customers year-over-year.” These developments underscore Microsoft’s strategic push to integrate AI agents across its product suite and infrastructure, positioning the company to lead in this transformative technological era.
