Satya Nadella Unveils GPT-5.5 Enhancements Across Microsoft’s Copilot Ecosystem

In a recent LinkedIn post, Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, announced the rollout of GPT-5.5 across several key Microsoft products, including GitHub Copilot, M365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, and Foundry. Nadella highlighted the advanced capabilities of GPT-5.5, emphasizing its role in accelerating the journey from idea to execution.

According to Nadella, the new iteration of GPT offers significant improvements in reasoning, multistep execution, and performance, particularly for long and complex tasks. He stated:

“With deeper reasoning, stronger multistep execution, and better performance across long, complex tasks, GPT-5.5 helps you go from idea to execution faster with fewer iterations to get to the right outcome.”

Nadella underscored the strategic importance of selecting the appropriate AI model for specific tasks within a user’s workflow. He elaborated on this concept in the context of GitHub Copilot CLI, explaining how users can dynamically switch between models based on the job at hand.

Optimizing Workflows with Model Selection

The CEO detailed a practical application within GitHub Copilot CLI, where faster models can be utilized for initial scaffolding and exploration, while more sophisticated, deeper reasoning models are employed for planning, requirement analysis, and making critical trade-offs. This selective approach aims to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Nadella further explained the process:

“Then GPT-5.5 can take that plan and turn it into working code, iterating, resolving errors, using tools, and validating results along the way.”

He also introduced the concept of a “Rubber Duck agent,” which facilitates a multi-model reflection loop for review. This feature allows GPT-5.5 to assess the output of another model, or vice versa, adding another layer of quality assurance.

GPT-5.5 Integration in M365 and Foundry

The benefits of GPT-5.5 extend beyond developer tools, impacting everyday work within Microsoft 365. Nadella highlighted its integration into M365 Copilot, where it works alongside other models and the Work IQ feature to analyze work data, execute complex tasks, and generate comprehensive documents and spreadsheets.

In Nadella’s view, the enterprise application space also sees significant advancement with Foundry:

“And in Foundry, you can build with GPT-5.5 using the security, governance, and orchestration required for enterprise applications and workflows.”
