In a recent LinkedIn post, entrepreneur Simon Squibb issued a strong warning about the pervasive nature of debt and the companies that promote it, particularly in the UK. Squibb, founder of the multi-million pound company that he sold in Hong Kong, shared his personal experiences and broader observations on how debt has become deeply ingrained in society, likening it to a form of ‘slavery’.

The Pervasive Influence of Debt Ratings

Squibb recounts his return to the UK in 2016, noting a stark contrast to his experience in Hong Kong in 1997. He observed that debt rating companies had gained significant control over individuals’ lives. Even with substantial personal wealth, Squibb found himself unable to secure essential services like broadband due to a lack of a ‘debt’ rating.

“When I return to the UK having sold my company in Hong Kong and even with millions in the bank I was told I could not get broadband services because I didn’t have a “debt” rating. Madness, it means you need debt to live in the UK!”

This experience led Squibb to question the necessity of debt for basic living in the UK. He argues that these companies actively seek to rate individuals not for their benefit, but to facilitate the sale of debt.

Debt as a Form of ‘Slavery’

The core of Squibb’s message is a critique of the debt industry, which he views as predatory. He expresses frustration with companies that he believes exploit individuals by encouraging debt accumulation.

“These companies are so awful. Chill out controlling people on Christmas Day, try not to be evil on at least one time of the year!”

As Squibb notes, these entities aim to get individuals rated to then sell them ‘slavery’ in the form of debt. He urges caution and advises people to avoid debt whenever possible, acknowledging the difficulty of this in the current UK economic climate.

A Call to Follow Dreams, Avoid Debt

Squibb concludes his post with an encouraging message, urging his followers to pursue their aspirations while actively steering clear of debt. He shared his thoughts on Christmas Day, sending a message of love and a reminder of his central thesis:

“Be careful folks and avoid debt if you can but in the UK it’s so hard I know. Follow your dreams and avoid debt! Sending love on Christmas Day to you all x”

Squibb’s post serves as a stark reminder from his perspective as a seasoned entrepreneur about the potential pitfalls of the modern financial system and the importance of financial independence.
