In a recent LinkedIn post, Steven Bartlett, host of the popular podcast “The Diary of a CEO,” has outlined a significant shift in his hiring philosophy, moving away from traditional metrics like CVs, smarts, and experience, and prioritizing attitude and learning speed instead. Bartlett asserts that the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence is fundamentally altering the value of specific skills, making adaptability and the capacity for rapid learning the most crucial attributes for success in the modern business landscape.
The Shrinking Half-Life of Skills
Bartlett highlights how AI is drastically reducing the shelf-life of specialized knowledge. He observes that skills which once took years to master can now be acquired in months, and skills that took months can now be learned in days. This phenomenon, he argues, means that individuals who have spent years developing expertise in areas that AI can now replicate instantaneously may not be as valuable as those who can quickly learn to leverage these AI tools.
“The person who spent a decade becoming an expert in something AI can now do instantly isn’t necessarily more valuable than someone who can learn to use that AI effectively by next week,” Bartlett writes. This observation underscores his belief that traditional markers of competence are becoming less relevant.
“The old signals, degrees, years of experience, prestigious company names, matter less than they ever have… Not because they’re worthless, but because they measure the wrong thing. They measure what you knew. What matters now is how quickly you can learn what you don’t!”
Prioritizing Attitude and Learning Velocity
To illustrate his point, Bartlett shared an anecdote about hiring Zara Jarvis. He explains that he flew her across the planet for a 24-hour immersion, not for a traditional interview, but to assess her attitude and learning velocity through a culture test and practical work. This approach allowed him to gauge qualities that a CV could never reveal.
Jarvis spent four days working with Bartlett’s team, receiving feedback and iterating on her approach. Bartlett was impressed by her performance, stating, “She was brilliant.” This experience led to her being offered a role with an intentionally broad title, designed to accommodate the evolving nature of work.
Flexibility as the Ultimate Attribute
Bartlett posits that flexibility has emerged as the ultimate attribute in today’s rapidly changing environment. This flexibility, in his view, is the genuine capacity to have one’s knowledge become obsolete and be rebuilt repeatedly, without losing momentum or resisting the necessary changes.
As Bartlett notes, his companies are actively hiring for numerous roles, from C-suite positions to junior staff. The core requirements for these positions are clear: a positive attitude towards change, a commitment to hard work, and an exceptionally fast learning ability.
“The key requirements to join us are: a positive attitude towards change, hard work, and the ability to learn very, very fast.”
A Call for Ambitious Talent
Bartlett concludes his post with a direct call to action for individuals who are seeking a challenging and ambitious career path. He invites potential candidates to email him directly at work@stevenbartlett.com, with their desired job title as the subject line, to receive a culture test.
He emphasizes a personal commitment to reviewing these submissions, promising to personally email candidates within 24 hours if their test results indicate alignment. This direct approach mirrors his personal engagement with Zara Jarvis, reinforcing his commitment to identifying and nurturing talent based on potential rather than past credentials.
“If that’s you, and you want to do something terrifyingly ambitious, come and join us!”
Furthermore, Bartlett encourages his network to share the post or tag individuals they believe would be a strong fit, highlighting the collaborative nature of talent acquisition in the face of evolving industry demands.
