In a recent LinkedIn post, Jason Feifer shares a powerful personal story illustrating the profound impact of simple acts of kindness and graciousness, particularly in a business context. Feifer recounts two pivotal encounters that shaped his approach to professional interactions, emphasizing how these moments, though seemingly small, fostered lifelong loyalty and influenced his own conduct.

The Transformative Power of a Hero Encounter

Feifer begins by detailing his experience meeting filmmaker Kevin Smith during his college years. Obsessed with Smith’s work, Feifer managed to secure him as a speaker for his university, an event that exceeded expectations. Smith not only engaged with students for an extended period but also remained present and gracious even after the formal event concluded.

“He showed up, took photos with students, and answered questions in an auditorium for five hours! Then we walked together to his car. He was still present, still gracious, still making me feel like I mattered.”

This encounter left a lasting impression on Feifer. As he notes in his post, the experience taught him a valuable lesson: “If people ever care what I have to say, I will be as gracious as Kevin Smith.” Feifer highlights that this principle now guides his own interactions, allowing him to fulfill the promise made to himself 25 years prior.

The Ripple Effect of Kindness

The narrative extends to Kevin Smith’s own experience with graciousness, as recounted by Feifer. Smith, in turn, learned a similar lesson from Peter Marshall, the host of Hollywood Squares, when Smith was just six years old. A simple, kind acknowledgment from Marshall served as a formative experience for the future filmmaker.

“The trickle-down effect of that is beautiful,” he told me. “I want to make people feel like THEY’RE the ones I came to see.”

Feifer uses this anecdote to underscore his central argument: small acts of kindness have a compounding effect. According to Feifer, these interactions can create lasting positive memories and foster deep-seated loyalty, a concept he contrasts with the business world’s typical focus on Lifetime Value (LTV).

Graciousness as a Business Strategy

Feifer argues that graciousness is, in fact, the simplest and most effective way to build LTV. He posits that the business world often overcomplicates customer retention and relationship building, overlooking the fundamental power of treating people with respect and kindness.

“In business, we obsess over LTV. But the simplest way to build it? Graciousness,” Feifer writes. He concludes his post by reiterating his personal testimony: “I’m living proof: One generous interaction turned me into a fan for life.” This sentiment encapsulates his belief that genuine human connection and thoughtful interactions are cornerstones of enduring professional relationships and business success.
