What misconception do people outside of your industry hold about it? by John Callahan

The “first-mover advantage” isn’t a guaranteed win in SaaS software. Here’s why:

* Market education: Early adopters might be forgiving of a nascent product, but later entrants can benefit from a more mature market understanding and user expectations.

* Product iteration: Early movers may be stuck with initial product decisions, while later entrants can learn from their mistakes and incorporate best practices.

* Focus on fit: By the time later entrants arrive, the market may be more clearly defined, allowing them to tailor their offering for a specific customer segment.

Early market movers need to defend their first mover position by relentlessly listening to markets and customers, and be prepared to pivot, to stay ahead of a pursuing late market entrants.
