In a recent LinkedIn post, John Barrows details a significant evolution in his sales prospecting methodology, leveraging AI to dramatically reduce the time spent on manual research and outreach sequencing. Barrows, a long-time sales trainer, shared how a decade-and-a-half of experience teaching a manual process for targeting top-tier accounts has been revolutionized by new AI tools.
For 15 years, Barrows has trained sales teams on a detailed, manual approach to prospecting into what he defines as “Tier 1” accounts. This robust, albeit time-consuming, process involved several meticulous steps. As Barrows outlines:
“Go into my ‘Tier1’ saved search in Linkedin Sales Navigator Find a Tier1 account and the executive in that account (VP of Sales, CRO, VP of Enablement) Go to their website, look at the Press Releases to find ‘trigger events’ Look through the persons Linkedin profile to find connections, posts and additional trigger events Collect all those trigger events onto a Google doc Find my ‘Sales-Ready Messaging’ that is relevant to the persona/person I’m reaching out to and any relevant content I have (Case Study, White Paper, etc) Map out a 7-10 touch sequence with different channels (emails, calls, linkedin) that combines personalization and relevance. Create individual tasks in Salesforce for each touch”
While effective, Barrows notes a critical drawback: the sheer amount of time it demanded. “It worked but it took me about an hour per account,” he stated. More importantly, he observed that even with proven success, many sales representatives struggled to consistently execute the process due to its time-intensive nature.
The AI Transformation
The game-changer for Barrows came with the integration of Apollo’s Claude AI connector. He explains that this technology has fundamentally altered his workflow, making the previously arduous tasks of research and sequencing almost instantaneous. Barrows now utilizes a custom skill within Claude, pre-loaded with his specific messaging framework, brand voice, Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), and persona targeting criteria.
According to Barrows, the AI now automates the entire initial research and outreach planning phase. “Every single day Claude automatically goes into Apollo, finds 3 Tier 1 accounts that match my exact criteria, does deep research on each one, pulls the most relevant and recent trigger events, and builds a hyper-personalized 7-10 touch sequence for each contact,” he shared.
From Hours to Minutes
The result is a dramatic acceleration of the prospecting process. Barrows highlights the efficiency gains, stating, “Every morning I wake up to 3 fully researched, fully sequenced Tier 1 accounts sitting in my Apollo task queue. Ready to go.” This shift means that tasks which previously took hours can now be accomplished in mere minutes.
Despite the automation, Barrows emphasizes the continued importance of human oversight. He believes that while AI can handle the heavy lifting of research and sequencing, the final approval remains crucial. “I still approve every single touch before it sends because I still believe that humans need to be the ‘last mile.’ The human quality check is what separates real outreach from spam,” Barrows argues.
In his view, the core of effective sales prospecting—the strategy and personalization—remains intact. The AI, in this analogy, acts as a powerful assistant, much like Jarvis to Iron Man, enabling the salesperson to operate at a significantly higher speed and scale. “The process hasn’t changed. The speed has,” Barrows concluded, underscoring the transformative impact of AI on his daily sales activities.
