Your day job might earn you enough money to pay for bills and living expenses. However, this does not always translate to a comfortable living, or even a meaningful existence. Many people therefore work on alternative ways to make money on top of their day to day. We refer to such extra income-generating schemes as side hustles, and they can be anything from moonlighting as a barista to offering freelance services online.
It certainly is a good thing to have as many side hustles as you need so long as you have your health in check. However, you might find yourself in a situation where your side hustle is putting your personal or career development on hold. Here are some signs that should tell you that your supplementary job is holding you back:
- Your work-life balance is messed up.
It isn’t easy to balance your life while working multiple jobs. This is especially true when you are freelancing instead of getting paid by the hour in a part-time occupation. Your side hustle can possibly take over the time that you can use to relax and focus on your personal needs. This can stress you out and negatively affect your health, so you will need an excellent strategy to balance life and work. Consider taking jobs that allow for room to breathe and scheduling your work so that they do not interfere with chores, recreation, and studies.
- You find it rather difficult to manage your time.
When you are working on multiple side hustles, they might end up taking much of your time and keep you from taking a break. Again, this can lead to burnout, so a properly laid out schedule is in order. Set a time dedicated to your side hustles instead of doing them sporadically, and reserve a schedule for rest and relaxation. You should also consider working on side hustles that require a regular schedule. If you are doing freelance work, do be sure to just work within the schedule allocated for your extra jobs to keep yourself from burning out.
- You are undervaluing your services.
You are not alone in the side hustling business, and you want to keep yourself competitive in the market. As such, you could sometimes end up offering your services for a lower price than you actually deserve, losing profit and your motivation as a result. You should therefore have a clear understanding of the value that you are putting into offering your services and price your work appropriately. Getting pay befitting of your work is a great motivator and lets you offer service of the best quality without worrying about loss of profit.
Side hustles are great so long as you keep them within the limits of your health and capability. While they make you great money that can bolster your finances, you should not allow your secondary occupation to keep you from further developing your potential. If they do, you will have to let them go as more opportunities await hardworking folks.
