In a recent LinkedIn post, John Barrows discusses his frustrations with the current state of AI-powered sales outreach, arguing that many companies are failing to deliver on their promises of genuine personalization. Barrows, a seasoned sales expert, highlighted instances where AI-generated messages lack authentic customization, often resorting to superficial changes that are easily detectable and annoying to recipients.

Barrows expressed his dismay at the perceived low bar for what is currently being labeled as “research” and “personalization” when driven by AI tools. He pointed out that this trend is a regression from earlier, simpler forms of automation.

“It’s even worse than the find/replace (name/title/industry) approach to ‘personalization at scale’ that we had with the cadence tools before AI.”

The Perils of Superficial Personalization

John Barrows argues that companies attempting to sell sophisticated AI-driven prospecting solutions must first demonstrate that they can effectively implement these strategies themselves. He finds it particularly irksome when a company’s sales messaging fails to reflect the very principles they claim to champion.

“Nothing annoys me more than a company who doesn’t even practice what they preach in their actual messaging when trying to sell what they do,” Barrows stated in his post.

According to Barrows, the disconnect between a vendor’s pitch and their execution undermines trust and credibility. He suggests that while the underlying technology of sequences and AI has value, its application in sales outreach needs a significant overhaul to be truly effective.

Critique of AI’s Role in Sales

While acknowledging the potential benefits of AI and automated sequences in sales, Barrows emphasizes that these tools should enhance, not replace, genuine human effort in personalization. He believes that true personalization requires a deeper understanding and a more nuanced approach than simply swapping out a few data points.

“Don’t get me wrong, I understand and appreciate the use of sequences and AI but if you’re going to sell me on your ‘personalized’ approach to prospecting you better damn well personalize it.”

Furthermore, Barrows touched upon the issue of experience claims, suggesting that simply stating years of experience or client numbers without context can be misleading. He implicitly calls for greater transparency and substance behind claims made by sales technology providers.

“by the way, 4 years working with 30 clients isn’t exactly impressive either…..”

Barrows’s critique serves as a call to action for sales professionals and technology providers to re-evaluate their approach to AI and personalization, urging for more authentic and effective strategies that genuinely resonate with prospects.
