In a recent LinkedIn post, John Barrows discusses a common pitfall in modern sales outreach: the persistent issue of AI-generated messages sounding inauthentic or ineffective. Barrows, a sales training expert, argues that the problem isn’t the artificial intelligence itself, but rather the quality of the information it’s fed – a concept he terms “garbage in, garbage out.” He highlights two prevalent, yet flawed, approaches companies take with their sales messaging.

One common strategy, according to Barrows, involves marketing teams tightly controlling sales sequences, leaving representatives with little to no autonomy. This results in reps acting like “robots,” simply executing pre-written scripts. He states:

“Marketing locked down the cadence tools, wrote all the messaging, and handed reps sequences with zero autonomy. Reps pushed buttons like robots.”

The alternative approach, Barrows observes, is to grant sales reps complete freedom in crafting their own messages. However, this often devolves into chaos over time, creating a “rat’s nest” where tracking effectiveness becomes impossible. As Barrows points out:

“They let reps write whatever they wanted. Six months later it’s a rat’s nest. Nobody knows what’s working or why.”

The Critical Distinction: Marketing vs. Sales Messaging

Barrows, drawing from his marketing background, emphasizes a fundamental difference between marketing and sales communication. While marketing messages are designed for broad audiences, sales messages need to be tailored to individual prospects. He argues that current AI tools often pull data from marketing materials, leading to outreach that sounds more like a brochure than a personalized, sales-oriented conversation.

“I have a Marketing background. I love Marketing people. But Marketing writes for audiences. Sales writes for individuals. Those are two completely different skills,” Barrows explains. He contends that this disconnect is a primary reason why AI outreach often falls flat.

Introducing ‘Sales-Ready Messaging’ as the Solution

To address the “garbage in, garbage out” problem, John Barrows champions the concept of “Sales-Ready Messaging.” He posits that this is the crucial element that aligns sales, marketing, and product teams and is the most effective lever for improving outreach results. In his view, this structured approach is key to overcoming the limitations of current AI tools.

“Sales-Ready Messaging is the linchpin that aligns sales, marketing, and product. It’s the single biggest lever I’ve found for fixing the ‘garbage in, garbage out’ problem, and it’s the module that produces the best results in my entire Filling the Funnel program.”

Barrows believes that by creating and feeding AI systems with well-crafted, sales-focused messages, businesses can achieve significantly better outcomes. He plans to share his proprietary formula for developing this type of messaging in an upcoming live Learning Lab.
