First, Guy Kawasaki’s shopping mall test: if you saw this candidate in a shopping mall tomorrow, would you walk over enthusiastically, or duck behind a rack? If it’s the second, don’t hire — however good the CV. Second, always include an audition. A developer does a coding assignment, a product manager writes an improvement proposal for one of our features, a salesperson gives a sales presentation. They do it in front of their future colleagues, not a panel of managers. Both sides learn something an interview never shows: what it would actually be like to work together.
