No single event — and I think that is the answer. I had a carefree childhood with parents I could always count on. They were proud of me, and they let me go discover life for myself. That combination, being safe and being left alone, is the most useful thing anyone has ever given me. It’s why risk doesn’t frighten me: when the floor underneath you never wobbled, you can afford to bet. I notice it in how I run a company — independent, patient, willing to say no. That confidence wasn’t earned. It was handed to me.
